Специалност “Science in civil engineering“, степен „магистър дава на студентите следните професионални умения за:
- Research and design of significant in volume and complexity building structures of buildings and facilities in new construction, restoration and reinforcement of structures;
- Elaboration or participation in the elaboration of investment projects in the construction, according to the given technical legal capacity;
- Organizing construction activities and managing the construction of buildings and facilities in accordance with approved projects and technical requirements;
- Preparation and use of technical and other documentation related to planning, implementation, reporting and acceptance of constructions;
- Experimental research and examination of building structures and facilities, of their individual elements and details, as well as field research;
- Use of software for solving engineering tasks, automation of activities from the design and execution of construction, compilation of documents and analysis of information;
- Controlling the construction of significant in volume and complexity constructions;
- Organizing and managing design activities;
- Performing activities related to design and construction supervision and conformity assessment activities;
- Carrying out author's supervision of the execution of the constructions;
- Bidding and contracting of design and construction activities;
- Organizing and controlling the activities for ensuring healthy and safe working conditions;
- Work with normative documents in the field of construction;
- Use of technical English.
Specialty "Science in civil engineeringgives students the following professional skills for:
1. Advanced mathematics for engineers, as deemed essential for the professional application of an engineer in the Construction Industry;
2. Ways of simulating spatial objects and their application in investment projects and engineering practice;
3. Main issues of Physics and Chemistry related to Construction;
4. Studying Mechanics of Solids, as well as investigating Stress-and-Strain behavior of various building structures;
5. Fundamentals of Engineering and Applied Geodesy;
6. Acquiring knowledge on rocks and soil, and building materials properties;
7. Geotechnical Survey and foundation-plan plotting, as well as methods for strengthening slopes and earthworks;
8. Building construction and founding of architecture;
9. Static and dynamic research, determining dimensions of and the construction of buildings and facilities;
10. Methods for control, inspection and testing of building structures;
11. Roads, railways lines, bridges;
12. Building installations;
13. Proper selection and use of heavy machinery, mechanized tools and other equipment in construction;
14. The technology for execution of construction and installation works;
15. Health and safety at work, ensuring fire safety, and observing environmental requirements in Construction;
16. Technical norms and legal regulations in Construction;
17. Economics of Construction – organization and management of construction activities.
How to Apply
- Candidates, who are citizens of countries outside European union and European economic area may apply if the minimum average grade in mathematics or physics from the diploma for completed secondary education is not lower than 62 percent of the maximum grade value according to the assessment system in the country where the secondary education was acquired.
Each applicant may have to submit the following documents:
- Standard Application form.
- Copy of the document for completed secondary education and of the appendix with the grades.
- A document issued by a competent authority certifying the applicant right to continue his / her education in the higher schools of the country in which his / her secondary education is acquired.
- Language proficiency document:
For the candidates who will study in Bulgarian and will not pass language and specialized training - a document for proficiency in Bulgarian language, issued by a higher school in the Republic of Bulgaria.
For candidates who will study in English and will not pass the language and specialized training - a recognized certificate (FCE, SAE, TOEFL, etc.) or high school diploma with enhanced teaching of English. - Medical certificate issued within one month before the date of the application and authenticated by relevant medical authority in the country from which the person is applying.
- A copy of the page from the international passport with the name of the candidate in Latin, his/hers date and place of birth.
- Document for paid deposit at VSU “L. Karavelov” in the amount of BGN 50 (the deposit will be deducted from the tuition fee upon registration). The documents under items 2, 3 and 5 must be legalized, translated in Bulgarian language and authenticated in accordance with the provisions of the international treaties of Republic of Bulgaria.

The Lyuben Karavelov Higher School of Civil Engineering - Sofia is the legal successor of the specialized military engineering civil engineering school, established in 1938 by a Decree of NV Tsar Boris III.
